Modern Filipino Heroes

November 2009 is a month to mark in the history of the Philippines as two Filipino heroes are recognized not only in the local scene but internationally. No one would ever think that anything can equal Manny Pacquiao's achievement this month when he beat Miguel Cotto and convinced the whole world that the greatest boxer of the world in this modern times, hails from the Philippines. A few days later, we are astonished as Efren Penaflorida is named The 2009 CNN Hero of the Year.

Both Filipinos may have earned their recognition in different ways but their achievement cannot be said to be lesser than the other. Both achievements equal Filipino pride, hope and inspiration. It is a statement that no matter how small our archipelago is, its people can be among the best in the world if they really want to be.

It can also be said that poverty is no longer an excuse not to be able to do great things and not be able to contribute to the changes our country desperately needs, for both these heroes were not born with silver spoons in their mouths, yet they still made it happen.

One thing common that I observed between these two heroes in the way they live their lives is that they live in the moment. They may think about the future or the past but they do not let the future or the past supercede the present. They learn from the past, but more importantly focus on what they can do now, to prepare for the future.

These two people are the living examples of JFK's words. JFK may have been speaking to America when he said this, but these words nonetheless are needed to be heard by our countrymen as well:

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country"

Let us all live by these words and Efren's as well:

"You are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."
